March 18, 2012: The Purple Pancake | March 17 | March 19 | 2011 | FOTD Home |
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Romance
fans enjoy
the adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel; cartoon fans laugh at
Sylvester the cat playing the Scarlet Pumpernickel; but how many have
heard of the Purple Pancake?
None?
This is because I just invented him (or it). He is not a
swashbuckling hero, he is a fractal -- the fractal that appears as
today's FOTD.
The scene lies deep in a larger pancake on a filament extending
northwest from the large period-2 bud of its parent Mandelbrot set,
which is infected in its depths with order-6 germs.
The image rates a 7. It has too many small imperfections to
rate
higher. But even a 7 is three points above the abysmal rating
of
yesterday's miserable FOTD.
The calculation time of 2-1/4 minutes is reasonably fast, but faster
viewing can be found on one of the FOTD web sites.
The day began gloomy here at Fractal Central, with heavy clouds hanging
low. But just after noon, the sun burst through in its full
glory, bringing a near-perfect afternoon with full sunshine and a
temperature of 68F 20C.
The fractal cats thought the conditions were perfect, and spent the
time watching the world go by. Meanwhile, the humans spent
the
day recovering from yesterday. The next FOTD will be posted
in 24
hours. Until then, take care, and I just found a Higgs
particle
on the basement stairs. I caught it and dropped it in an
empty
jar. It is threatening to decay or tunnel out, so where do I
take
the particle to win the Nobel prize and get rich before it disappears?
